The overlooked event strategies savvy sponsors never miss

Every year, brands drop billions on sponsorship packages that dangle promises of “maximum exposure” and “quality leads.” Sounds great on the sales deck, right?

But here’s the kicker: global sponsorship spend hit $65.8 billion in 2021 and is on track to hit $75.8 billion by 2025; yet most sponsors are still scratching their heads trying to prove ROI.

The truth? Events work

In fact, 32% of B2B marketers say events outperform every other channel for lead generation. And converting leads at trade shows is 38% cheaper than chasing them down with cold calls.

So no, events aren’t broken. The real issue is how sponsors are showing up. Too many are still obsessing over booth traffic and banner logos while their savvier competitors are quietly scooping up high-intent buyers in places they didn’t even think to look.

Let’s fix that.

The purchase intent crisis (and why you’re showing up too late)

Here’s the reality check: 83% of B2B buyers set their requirements before they ever talk to a vendor (thanks, Gartner).

So, by the time you’re pulling someone into your booth for a demo, chances are they’re already halfway through their decision-making.

Now, think about what event registration really means. An attendee isn’t just signing up: they’re signalling interest, investing time (and money), raising their hand to say, “Yep, I’m shopping for solutions in your industry.”

Yet most sponsors? They never see that data. And that’s a shame, because event leads convert 3–10x higher than digital ones if you actually act on those signals.

The touchpoints sponsors often ignore

After years of helping sponsors at Lüp Events, I can tell you first-hand that most of them think their one shot is during exhibition hours. Spoiler: it’s not.

Take the humble ticket confirmation email. My colleagues at Lüp routinely receive attendee questions regarding their tickets: resending, checking details, or adding tickets to their mobile wallet. Even if they’re not actively checking your event emails, promo, or social media, they will keep coming back to their ticket confirmation because it’s prime real estate tying your brand to the anticipation and buzz of the event itself.

Yet, not many sponsors are aware of this opportunity, let alone take advantage of this prime real estate.

When I first show sponsors this touchpoint, they usually look at me like I just handed them the cheat codes. And for good reason: sponsors we’ve worked with who put their brand there have seen booth traffic jump by 200%.

Why? Because you’ve already made the first impression before the event even starts.

With your brand placed prominently on every attendee ticket, you are exposed to thousands of visitors way before the event starts. This is your chance to cut through the noise and make an impression before the event even starts.

The follow-up fumble that causes diminishing ROI

We have to talk about the part where most ROI goes to die: post-event follow-up.

79% of trade show leads never hear from the sponsor again, which is an unfortunate waste of effort. But when sponsors do follow up, it’s usually with a generic “Thanks and nice to meet you” email that’s deleted faster than you can say “Unsubscribe me”.

Meanwhile, companies that actually nurture their event leads properly generate 50% more sales at 33% less cost

Timing also really matters here. Leads contacted within 60 seconds are 9x more likely to convert. Yet we still see sponsors wait at least an hour before reaching out.

And let’s not forget, today’s buyers don’t want the hard sell. Translation: your follow-up needs to feel like a conversation, not a pitch.

The best sponsors send tailored content tied to sessions attended, challenges mentioned during registration, or actual conversations from the event floor.

That’s how you turn “Nice to meet you” into “Let’s do business.”

Competing in a $100 billion market

The event world is booming again, thankfully. In-person events are bouncing back strong, with 65% of planners expecting attendance to grow in 2025.

This all points to the reality that your prospects are regularly being bombarded with sponsorship messages, which is precisely why just showing up isn’t going to cut it anymore.

The real winners are the brands that treat the event journey like a relationship: showing up early, staying visible through smart touchpoints, and following up like they actually care.

Because in a $100 billion market, the brands that charm, engage, and partner strategically? They’re the ones who walk away with the deals.
